Metal Roofing and Walls:
Installing any wall insulation requires a little forward planning as wall batts can only be installed prior to the wall linings being applied, i.e. at the time of construction, recladding or replastering.Retrofitting wall insulation sounds like a major task, but improving the acoustics in your existing home is not as hard as it sounds. By removing the plasterboard from one side of the wall and adding Acoustic Insulation around specific problem areas you can significantly improve the acoustic performance of existing walls.
What should you use?
Acousti-Therm
Acousti-Therm Batts are manufactured from premium, high density glasswool. Their high-density nature means that they provide excellent acoustic and thermal performance making your home comfortably quiet.
Polycoustic Batts
Polycoustic Batts are high-density polyester batts that are ideally suited to increase the acoustic performance of your home. It can be used on internal or external walls, floors and ceilings to control the transfer of noise through the home, making it a more peaceful place for you to live.
Loaded Vinyl
Loaded Vinyl, also known as sound baffle, is a heavy weight membrane that can be used in both walls and ceilings to reduce noise transmission. Loaded vinyl is extremely good at addressing low frequency noise – such as aircraft and train noise. When coupled with Acousti-Therm batts the system is very effective at treating noise at all frequency levels.
Once the walls are treated care must be taken to ensure doors, windows, window frames and other penetrations do not short-circuit your efforts. Solid cove doors, weather stripping, heavy curtains or double glazing will assist in keeping noise in check.
Installing acoustic insulation in your walls will give you control over the level of unwanted outside noise leaking in. It also ensures noise generated inside your house doesn’t disturb neighbours. But it’s also great for use in internal walls to cut down on the noise from our lifestyles including home entertainment units, bathrooms and laundries. It gives you the control to create a more comfortable and peaceful home.
For Metal roofing and walls:
For domestic insulation requirements glasswool R1.5~R2.0 or an acoustic to the same R Value is sufficient. But for commercial requirements, where ceilings of sheds, swimming pools etc need to be insulated, Vapa~Chek is a great choice. Vapa~Chek is Australia's most popular metal deck roof insulation on the market today. You can also choose from a selection of foil and blanket alternatives.
An increasing amount of architects and specifiers are considering insulating the metal slidings in buildings to improve thermal comfort for occupants and reduce heating and cooling costs. Vapa~Chek is a cost effective option for this application and will also help by absorbong internal noise. Even if you only insulate the east and west facing walls (which recieve the greatest heat band in summer), the improvement on internal comfort can be significant.
For roof acoustic treatments there are two options for commercial buildings. For the reduction in the noise transfer of rain and hail, Vapa~Chek ~when compared to an uninsulated roof ~ the 75mm Vapa~Chek reduced rain noise by up to 18dB(A) when installed under a metal roof. Vapa~Chek, under a metal roof will also provide an STC (Sound Transmission Class) or Rw of approximately 25~30. Where higher noise reduction are required , a ceiling structure of loaded vynal materials should be considered.
The second option is achieved by adding insulation to the roof and/or walls to absorb noise. The standard 75mm Vapa~Chek with light duty foil has reasonalbly good noise absorbtion properties, absorbing approximately 75% of noise that hits it's surface. However, for greater levels of noise absorbtion, particularly at high frequencies, Vapa~Chek can be supplied with a special acoustic perforated foil finish. In this instance you will need to note the perforated foil surface will not provide a vapor barrier.
